Royal Crown Derby War Dog, Limited Edition

The War Dog is the latest addition to Royal Crown Derby’s commemoration of the service of military animals. Designer Sarah Whitehurst depicts a scene of trench warfare using sketched pencil strokes to create a sense of memory and reflection. The imagery powerfully emphasizes both the physical and psychological impacts of battle, but also the welcomed companionship that war dogs provided. Oversized Flanders field poppies adorn each side of this piece, adding strong scarlet colours whilst symbolizing both healing and remembrance. Inspired by World War II propaganda textiles, Sarah has concealed the words “lest we forget” around the base of the piece, which can be deciphered using a mirrored surface. “Mirror writing” was used on garments during the war allowing citizens to support the troops in another way. This had an immediate effect on the wearer who would be reminded of their patriotic duty, every time they glanced in a mirror.
