A darling blue tit stands on an apple handcarved of gorgeous brecciated red jasper .Derived from the Greek word iaspi meaning “spotted stone,” jasper was worn by Ancient Egyptian priests, buried with mummies for protection in the afterlife, and is even said to be the foundation stone of New Jerusalem. Some Native American tribes also use jasper to dowse for water and call for rain. Brecciated red jasper contains the iron ore hematite, which results in the rich red colors and complex patterning.
